Transport for New South Wales in Sydney has short-listed incumbent supplier Cubic Transportation Systems for its new back-office contract along with a second vendor, while Hitachi Rail and a few other suppliers are believed to have missed the cut, Mobility Payments has learned.
The fact that Cubic likely lost its valuable revenue-collection contract with Transport for London (Cubic filed suit last month to appeal TfL’s decision to award the contract to rival vendor Indra Systems), makes it even more critical for Cubic to win in Sydney.
Tip Sheet: Sydney Transport Authority to Issue Much-Anticipated RFP for Opal Next Generation by July

Transport for New South Wales this week issued an advance notice of its plans to release its long-awaited request for proposal for its Opal Next Generation fare project. The Sydney authority, a major backer of open-loop payments, said Tuesday that it plans to issue the RFP within two months.
The authority confirmed its tender request will nclude two major parts, an “ABT Solution” and a vehicle-tracking “Bus Solution, which Mobility Payments reported last month was likely.

Update: A long-awaited request for proposal for the major Opal Next Generation project from Sydney authority Transport for New South Wales is now expected "around the middle of 2024," an agency spokeswoman told Mobility Payments. That will be two years after officials first announced the project.
