Hong Kong Tramways Launches Open-Loop Payments, with Busy Metro System to Come

Hong Kong Tramways recently became the latest–and still one of the few–transit operators in Hong Kong to support open-loop payments. But more are coming.

Most notably, that will include Hong Kong’s metro, operated by the Mass Transit Railway, or MTR. The metro is rolling out contactless payments acceptance at gates across the 10-line metro.

Dutch Railways Reports 70,000 Riders Tapped to Pay during First Week after Launch of Open Loop

Around 70,000 customers tapped their debit cards and other open-loop cards and credentials to pay for rides with Dutch national rail operator Nederlandse Spoorwegen, or NS, during the first week after the operator launched open-loop service, Jan. 31, an NS spokeswoman confirmed to Mobility Payments.

Canadian City to Launch Its First Closed-Loop Contactless Card Rollout Today

Canada’s fifth largest city, Edmonton, launches its first electronic fare card today, with the closed-loop contactless Arc card becoming available for standard adult fares. An open-loop payments service will eventually follow, Cameron Grayson, director, transit innovation programs for the Edmonton Transit Service, or ETS, told Mobility Payments in a statement.

Moscow to Test Mobility-as-a-Service Platform that will Include Use of Contactless Payments

The Moscow Department of Transport has announced it is launching a test of its planned “MultiTransport” mobility-as-a-service platform, which will enable users to plan and pay for rides on the Moscow Metro and other public transit, along with taxis. The city said it is planning to add other transport modes, including car-share and bike and scooter rental.
